Tenda Mesh Wifi 6e Series

Tenda update its lineup products in addition of previous models Tenda Nova MX6 and MX12 series with newer and faster models of Tenda MX15 Pro and Tenda MX21 Pro. These two addition models are working at slightly different network segment. What make these two models are different?

Tenda MX21 vs MX15

Physically the two series look the same, the stylist design, the appearance body and the number of port interfaces are almost the same. However, Tenda MX21 Pro is designed based on the enhanced version of wifi 6 technology that includes distinct 6GHz radio band in addition of the standard 2.4GHz and 5GHz band, so this MX21 Pro is a three radio band models.

On the other hand, the Tenda MX15 Pro is a two radio band wifi 6 system that works at ax5400 network segment, almost the same as the newer model Tenda MX21 Pro that works at AXE5700. The price difference between these two series is not much difference. So opting the newer model Tenda MX21 Pro is more advantages knowing that this model comes with three distinct radio bands and is embedded with faster Quad core processor.

The Tenda MX21 Pro is an alternative product with budget friendly price that work at the same network segment like those similar products offered by most popular vendors such as TP-Link, Netgear, Asus and Linksys.

Tenda MX21 Pro vs Deco XE75 Pro

TP-Link Deco XE75v Pro has been around in the market for a while and becomes one of popular wifi 6e products in middle range network segment, and has received positive reviews to date. Tenda MX21 Pro comes later and is targeted to compete with this deco model but with budget friendly price. Let’s see how these two products perform.

Table 2 below reveals spec comparison table between Tenda MX21 Pro and Deco XE75 Pro. Both products are designed with the same enhanced wifi 6e technology and work at slightly different network segment. Both 5GHz and 6GHz radio band deliver the same bandwidth, but the 2.4GHz doesn’t. Technically both work at the same middle range network segment.

Deco XE75 Pro

The only technical spec difference is the wired Ethernet ports. Both products come with the same number of Ethernet ports, but Deco XE75 pro comes equipped with 2.5Gbps WAN port for multi-gig internet speed. You can find today that the fastest DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem comes equipped with 2.5Gbps port such as Arris S33 or Netgear CM2000, so when the requirement of multi-gig internet speed higher than 1Gbps, Deco is ready but Tenda MX21 pro is not ready.

You will judge which one is suitable to meet your business need. If the requirement of internet is still below 1Gbps, Tenda MX21 Pro is appropriate. But, if you require multi-gig internet speed higher than 2Gbps, Deco XE75 Pro would be the choice.

Tenda MX21 Pro vs Linksys Velop

This new Tenda mx21 pro with budget friendly is also an alternative product for new Linksys Velop Pro 6e which also works at the same middle network segment based on wifi 6e technology. Linksys Velop Pro 6e is also a Tri-band axe5400 similar as Deco XE75 Pro.

  1. Hi thank you for comparing MX21 pro with other 2 popular brands. I am interested in Tenda for 1) allowing separate SSIDs for 2.4G and I have some IoTs still unable to deal with unified 2.4G/5G settings most routers have and 2) for the competitive price / package. It seems Tenda does not have a dedicated wireless backhaul channel. I asked Tenda about the impact and they gave me the following:

    Attached you also find the only validated schemes to create a backhaul connection for a Mesh system.

    A mesh system is a network of interconnected devices, known as nodes, that collaborate to extend the coverage of a wireless or wired network. Here’s how it works:

    1. **Mesh Topology**: Nodes are distributed so that each node is connected to several others, creating a mesh structure.

    2. **Self-Organization**: Nodes in a mesh network can self-configure and find the optimal path to route data through the network.

    3. **Client Nodes and Backhaul Nodes**: Some nodes serve as access points for client devices (end-users), while others act as backhaul nodes to transfer data between nodes and the main connection (e.g., the Internet).

    4. **Dynamic Routing**: The mesh network can dynamically adapt to changes in topology or congestion, allowing efficient data routing.

    5. **Self-Healing**: In case of failures or issues with a node, the mesh network can self-heal by finding new paths to maintain connectivity.

    6. **Coverage Extension**: Since each node is connected to several others, the mesh network can extend coverage without the need for additional cables.

    With all Tenda mesh models, it is possible to make a backhaul connection (i.e. cabling it), this reinforces the primary connectivity, which is always in Wi-Fi.

    In a mesh system the signal “bounces” from one node to another, among the satellites there are not only electromagnetic interferences, but walls, iron materials in them and slabs (above all these) that the signal has to penetrate and the sum of all these factors causes physiological losses in terms of speed.

    Each node communicates with the other via a dedicated WiFi channel that is not visible to the user.

    What would you say about this? It seems Tenda is saying only hard wired backhaul is making a difference.

    1. Tenda design the backhaul share with other connected devices, it doesn’t use dedicated backhaul like most Orbi products. Most mesh wifi products allow you to configure optional wired backhaul using the wired Ethernet ports that connecting the mesh router and its satellites. Wired backhaul is more reliable than wifi which is prone to electromagnetics interference and other obstacles like concrete walls etc.

      The other option you may like is backhaul using powerline which is offered by Deco x50 POE, or Asus xp4. Both products use your home existing electrical wiring for backhaul link between router and the satellites.
