Various models of Motorola native cable modems have been around for years and this is one of the Cable modem with wireless router integration offered in the market for easy deployment of a wireless network for novice users with Cable broadband internet services. Even though mostly all native Surfboard Cable modems have been around for years with excellent customer ratings in some online stores, the rating of SBG6580 is not so good like those native modems. Users prefer deploy native cable modem plus wireless router separately. With separate modem, they can freely change the wireless router that meets their need. They can choose whatever the wireless router is from standard wireless N300 router from Medialink to the high end wireless ac1900 router such as R7000 by Netgear or Linksys EA6800.
SBG6580 is designed similar with other Motorola cable modems, vertical form factor box with black color. It is not designed with stylist model like its predecessor SB5101 and looks rigid.
Like Motorola famous cable modem SB6120 and SB6121, this SBG6580 comes with DOCSIS 3.0 technology for faster upstream and downstream speed. Mostly Cable providers today are ready with DOCSIS 3.0 infrastructure, assure your home cable modem is based on DOCSIS 3.0 technology for optimum throughput. The download speed can be up to 300Mbps and even 400Mbps with EuroDOCSIS technology, and can support up to 8channel bonding, while the downstream can be up to 100Mbps. This is ideal for streaming video or other multimedia services.
Unlike native modem that comes without the NAT feature, SBG6580 comes with the router / NAT feature to allow you share the internet and have a better protection against any internet threats, and the SPI feature helps scanning incoming traffic from the Internet more thoroughly. In addition, the gateway also comes with the DoS (Denial of Services) protection feature.
To support your home wifi network for Android, iOS mobile devices and some laptops or desktop computers, this device can perform well. It is engineered by the wireless N300 technology with dual band support. Unfortunately, this does not work simultaneously but selectable band – one band in a time. This is the drawback of this modem gateway; it cannot accommodate mobile devices that work in mix 2.4GHz and 5GHZ bands at the same time.
The modem gateway comes with 4xGigabit Ethernet ports to let you connect up to four computers using Ethernet cable. Mostly brand new computers come with Gigabit NIC adapter, and so do some types of multimedia devices.
Wondering how to provide IP address to your connected devices? No problem, the SBG6580 features DHCP server to automatically provide IP configuration to the connected clients, no hassle of configuring static IP address manually. This will help you reduce the network administration overhead.
For securing the wifi connection, you must implement the highest security available. This device supports the industrial wireless security WPA/WPA2 (Wireless Protected Access) as well as legacy WEP with 64/128 bit encryption and TKIP, AES, 802.1x, 802.11i (pre-authentication). For secure client connection to the network, the device supports user-friendly Wi-Fi protected setup (WPS) to easily connect with WPS compatible device.
With a single all-in-one device you can easily setup the SBG6580 straight away. Just connect the coaxial cable to the Cable line, and plug in the power cable. That’s it, easy to install. The following figure shows you the connection diagram typically setup in homes or small offices.
Many people have multiple media devices including XBOX console, Blu-Ray, internet HDTV etc. therefore installing a multi-port media device is advantageous such as Linksys WES610N with four Ethernet ports.
