Nighthawk X4s DOCSIS 3-1 Cable Modem Router
New introduction of DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem technology which is 10x faster than the DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem triggers networking vendors to introduce new models of modem and modem gateway based on this DOCSIS 3.1 technology. Netgear and Arris are two of the pioneer vendors to apply this technology into their new products.
Nighthawk X4s C7800
Arris offers new model of Surfboard SBG6950ac2 cable modem router and SBG7400ac2 cable modem router, both products are built based on wave 2 wireless AC technology with built-in DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem. And Netgear offers Nighthawk X4s aka C7800 wireless cable modem router. The spec comparison between the two products will be discussed in next following paragraphs.
Netgear C7000 has been around in the market for some times and it’ been a successful product, a compact all-in-one wireless AC1900 router with built-in DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem. And today, Netgear introduces he higher speed wireless cable modem router product – the Nighthawk X4s C7800 – a wireless AC3200 router with built-in the latest cable modem technology DOCSIS 3.1.
Nighthawk X4s DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem delivers downstream internet speed up to 1Gbps (32x channel bonding and 2×2 OFDM) and is backward compatible with DOCSIS 3.0 cable infrastructure. It’s ready for future > 1Gbps speed, the highest possible speed your cable service can provide you.
C7800 is combining the modem and high speed wireless AC3200 dual band router delivers speed up to 1,000 Mbps @2.4GHz with 1024 QAM support plus 2,200 Mbps @5GHz 11ac. It is an equivalent of having Netgear CM1000 DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem or newer introduction of Surfboard SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem plus wireless AC3200 dual band router such as Linksys WRT AC3200 dual band router or any two band wireless AC3200 router.
C7800 vs C7000
Now, what is the difference between Nighthawk C7800 and the previous model of C7000? To see the spec differences take a look at the following table that list main head to head spec comparison between the two models.
Table 1 Nighthawk C7800 vs C7000
|Model||Nighthawk C7800||Nighthawk C7000|
|Built-in modem||DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem||DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem|
|Internet speed||2×2 OFDM ready up to 9Gbps / 32×8 channel bonding speeds of up to 1Gbps internet downstream||24×8 channel bonding speeds of up to 960Mbos internet download|
|Wifi||Wireless AC3200 dual band||Wireless AC1900 dual band|
|Wifi speeds||1000 Mbps @2.4GHz with 1024 QAM support + 2200 Mbps @5GHz 11ac)||1300Mbps @5Ghz band plus 600Mbps @2.4Ghz band|
|Ethernet Ports||4x Gigabit LAN ports||4x Gigabit LAN ports|
|USB ports||2x USB 3.0 ports||1x USB 2.0 port|
See that there are significant differences both in cable modem and the wifi speeds, the USB port is also two high speed USB 3.0 ports for C7800 as opposed to only 1x USB 2.0 port in C7000.
- Wireless router with Built-in latest DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem technology, 10x as high speed as DCOSIS 3.0 technology
- 32/8 channel bonding internet speed / 2×2 OFDM delivers downstream internet speed of up to 1Gbps DOCSIS 3.0 and is ready for > 1Gbps plans DOCSIS 3.1 provider
- Based on wireless AC3200 dual band wireless technology with 4×4 (2.4GHz) + 4×4 (5GHz) data streams
- Wifi speeds of up to 2,200Mbps @5Ghz band and up to 1,000Mbps @2.4Ghz band with active antennas
- Beamforming+ for more reliable connections on 2.4 and 5GHz bands

Nighthawk C7800 vs Surfboard SBG7400AC2
Now, one of new product introduction by Arris is Surfboard SBG7400AC2 in addition of Surfboard SBG6950AC2. Both are wireless AC router with built-in cable modem. The SBG7400AC2 is the fastest one offered by Arris that I would like to compare it with Nighthawk X4s.
Please refer to table 2 that represents head to head spec comparison between the two products.
Arris Surfboard SBG7400AC2 is based on latest wave 2 wireless AC technology, while Nighthawk is still based on wireless AC. Wave 2 AC technology is ready for Gigabit wireless speed with MU-MIMO technology ready.
Nighthawk C7800 offers higher Wifi speeds up to 3200Mbps as opposed to only 2,200Mbps in Surfboard.
The fundamental technical difference is DOCSIS technology applied to each of the model. With DOCSIS 3.1 you are ready with future gigabit internet plans from provider when the technology is ready. DOCSIS 3.0 speeds is also faster in Nighthawk with 32/8 channel bonding, even though Surfboard with 24/8 is also capable of down streaming internet up to 1Gbps.
Table 2 Netgear C7800 vs Surfboard SBG7400AC2
|Model||Netgear C7800 Nighthawk X4s||Surfboard SBG7400AC2|
|Built-in Modem||DOCSIS 3.1||DOCSIS 3.0|
|Download internet speed||32×8 channel bonding / 2×2 OFDM speeds up to 1Gbps and is ready for >1Gbps plans DOCSIS 3.1||24×8 channel bonding DOCSIS 3.0 speeds up to 1,000Mbps|
|Wifi technology||Wireless AC3200 dual band with beamforming and active antenna 4×4 streams||Wave 2 wireless AC2350 dual band with Integrated Multi-User MIMO Antennas for each band, 4×4 array for 5 GHz radio and 3×3 array for 2.4 GHz radio|
|Wifi speeds||2,200Mbps @5Ghz plus 1,000Mbps @2.4Ghz||1750Mbps @5Ghz plus 450Mbps @2.4Ghz|
|Ethernet Ports||4x Gigabit LAN ports||4x Gigabit LAN ports|
|USB ports||2x USB 3.0 ports||USB 2.0 Powered Host Port|
|MSRP (Dec 2017)||$399.99||$209.99|
See that the price tagged for Nighthawk X4s is still costly, twice as much as the price tagged for Surfboard. Now you will judge which one is suitable to meet your business. Surfboard SBG7400AC2 is still DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem however it can fit to all provider’s plan. To support future DOCSIS 3.1 technology, Nighthawk X4s is preference.
