Nighthawk CAX80 DOCSIS 3.1 Modem Wifi 6 Router
Netgear introduces new Nighthawk CAX80 wifi 6 ax6000 router with built-in DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem. How good is this product compared with Surfboard SBG8300 cable modem router?
With long years of its experiences in producing networking gears, Netgear has produced various models of cable modem with wifi devices and it is now reaching its top level product in cable modem with wifi when it released Nighthawk CAX80. This product is a wifi 6 ax6000 router with built-in DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem.
Wifi 6 technology
In the previous era of wifi 5 technology, Netgear successfully marketed the Nighthawk C7000 wireless ac1900 with built-in 24×8 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem, then followed by Nighthawk C7800 AC3200 with built-in DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem and another mesh wifi cable modem product – Orbi CBK40 mesh wifi AC2200 with a built-in 32×8 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem. Now Netgear comes with Nighthawk CAX80 WiFi 6 router with built-in 32×8 DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem.
If it can be summarized, the last three cable modem router products released by Netgear at high speed can be seen in the following table.
|Nighthawk C7800||Orbi CAX40||Orbi CAX80|
|Cable Modem||DOCSIS 3.1||32x 8 DOCSIS 3.0||2×2 OFDM, 32×8 DOCSIS 3.1|
|Downstream speed||Up to 1,4 Gbps||Up to 1.4Gbps||Up to 1.4Gbps|
|Built-in wifi router||Simultaneous dual band AC3200 (2,200 + 1,000)||Simultaneous tri-band AC2200 (866 + 866 + 400)||Simultaneous dual band ax6000 (4.8Gbps + 1.2Gbps)|
|Coverage||Up to 3,000 sq ft||Up to 4,000 sq ft||Up to 2,500 sq ft|
The main competing vendor in cable modem is Arris with its Surfboard cable modem series, and up to Sep 2020 Arris doesn’t yet release a wifi 6 router with built-in cable modem. Arris just released Surfboard Max Pro AX11000 wifi 6 router as its top product so far.
And the latest product is still based on wifi-5 technology – the Surfboard SBG8300, the rival of Netgear C7800 Nighthawk X4s. See Surfboard sbg8300 vs C7800 Nighthawk X4s.
What if you need to add more coverage with this Cax80? Netgear is ready with its wifi 6 range extender, you can add Netgear eax20 ax1800 range extender or you can add similar ax6000 technology – the Netgear eax80 range extender.
Netgear complements this Cax80 with 4x Gigabit LAN ports where two ports can be combined into aggregated ports for link aggregated bandwidth requirements up to 2Gigabit. Not just that, it also comes with one multi-gig 2.5Gbps LAN port should you require high speed Gigabit wired speed for NAS storage connection such as Asustor AS5304T that comes with two 2.5GbE for your personal private cloud.
- The first high speed wifi 6 ax6000 router with built-in DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem
- High speed up to 1.2Gbps @2.4GHz with 4×4 1024 QAM and up to 4.8Gbps @5GHz with 4×4 1024 QAM for total bandwidth up to 6,000Mbps
- Covers up to 2,500 sq ft connecting up to 30 devices
- Built-in DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem 2×2 OFDM + 32×8 channel bonding, up to 1Gbps internet speed, support any cable modem providers

This product is tagged with the price around $429.99 in Amazon, and still cheaper than should you purchased separate DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem such as Netgear C1000 that costs around $155.00, plus wifi 6 router such as Netgear rax80 ax6000 that costs around $390.00 for total of around $545.0 and the good thing is you can reduce clutter of devices.
Nighthawk CAX80 vs Surfboard Sbg8300
Now, compare this product with the latest cable modem with router product offered by Arris – Surfboard Sbg8300 DOCSIS 3.1 wireless AC2200 router.
As reference take a look at the following spec comparison table between the two products to help you understand the differences.
See that the main differences are wifi 6 technology and the embedded multi-Gig Ethernet ports offered by Nighthawk cax80. Cax80 offers total bandwidth up to 6,000Mbps as opposed to Surfboard which total bandwidth is up to 2,200Mbps.
Cax80 is equipped with 4xGigabit Ethernet ports for LAN, same as Surfboard. However, Cax80 add one more port – the Multi-Gig 2.5Gbps LAN port for high speed wired connection such as NAS with multi-gig port.
All other cable modem specs are the same DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem.
