If so far the cable modem products with built-in wifi 6 router’s market have been dominated by Netgear cax80, now you have option products offered by Motorola and Arris. How is the competition for all-in-one cable modem with built-in wifi 6 router products in the market?

Cable Modem with Wifi 6
For almost a year, Netgear cax80 was one of the wifi-6 router products with built-in DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem dominating the electronic market, while competitors from similar products from Arris and Motorola had not released similar products until the end of the last quarter of 2021. Now you have options of all-in-one wifi 6 router products with built-in Docsis 3.1 cable modem from both vendors.
Motorola released the Motorola mg8725 and Motorola mg8733 after few years released its successful flagship product with Motorola mg8702; while Arris released Surfboard G34 and G36 following its successful flagship product, Surfboard sbg8300.
Motorola MG8725 and MG8733
Motorola introduces these two models of Motorola Mg8725 and Mg8733 are exactly the same except few features differences. The main differences are the inclusion of two Telephony interfaces RJ11 for use with Comcast Xfinity for Mg8733 but the mg8725 isn’t.
Mg8733 also comes with UPS battery backup system (sold separately) you can opt to use UPS battery system to last up to 8, 16 or 24 hours. With these two phone lines feature, of course there are differences in the LED lights too. Mg8733 has additional LEDs for Tel1, Tel2 and UPS.
Both of these products are all-in-one cable modem with wifi, the new generation of wifi 6 ax6000 router with built-in DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem. As general, both products have the same following specs and features, except the above differences for mg8733.
- Simultaneous dual band ax6000 wifi 6 routers with 8 data streams
- Wifi speeds up to 1200Mbps (4×4) @2.4GHz and up to 4800 Mbps (4×4) @5GHz
- Multi SSIDs, up to 4x SSIDs (2 SSIDs / band)
- Equipped with 4x internal dual-band antennas with power boost wireless amplifiers
- Comes with 1x 2.5Gbps LAN port and 3x Gigabit LAN ports with auto sensing technology
- Comes with built-in DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem, supports up to 3,780Mbps downstream and up to 800Mbps upstream
- No USB port for storage disk sharing
With these features, can these two products compete with similar products in the market especially with most popular Netgear Nighthawk cax80 that has been available for almost a year before Motorola released these two products?
Motorola Mg8725 vs Nighthawk Cax80
To be able to see the spec and feature differences between Motorola and Netgear products, you can refer to table 1 below to make it easier to see the strengths and weaknesses of each product. We take mg8725 instead of mg8733 since mg8725 doesn’t come with Telephone line port, so doesn’t cax80.
Both come with the same wifi technology, ax6000 wifi 6 with 8 data streams, each radio band supports 4×4 MU-MIMO technology.
Are there wifi card adapters that support wifi 6 technology available in the market today? Of course, there are many PCI-e adapters that support 2×2 mu-mimo dual band ax3000, such as the archer ax3000 adapter or the asus ax3000 adapter. See also Asus ax3000 and Archer tx3000 wifi 6 adapters.
If there are two desktops in your home with this Asus or Archer adapter installed, a 4×4 router like Motorola and Cax80 can send two data streams to two desktops at once, without having to take turns one by one so that your network is more efficient and latency-free.
In terms of Ethernet ports, Netgear cax80 provides one more Ethernet port than Motorola. And the good thing is that both products provide one 2.5Gbps multi-gig port that you can use for wired connections to desktops with multi-gig ports or to NAS storage with multi-gig ports such as Asustor Lockerstor 2 AS6602T.
One more thing Cax80 is superior to Motorola is that cax80 provides one USB 3.0 port, Motorola is not available. You can use this USB port to share USB disk storage across the network. For more details see the following spec comparison table for Motorola mg8725 vs netgear cax80.

Apart from Motorola and netgear, Arris also released two series of wifi 6 cable modem products after surviving for a long time with its flagship product Surfboard Sbg8300 that still based on wifi 5 technology.
Arris Surfboard wifi 6 cable modem
Like Motorola that released two models of wifi 6 router with built-in DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem, so does arris with its Surfboard G34 and G36 models. These two product models are exactly the same except for one spec difference, the addition of a multi-gig 2.5Gbps port on G36 model. Unlike Motorola where both models are based on ax6000, Arris released these two models based on ax3000.
If above we have discussed the comparison between Motorola mg8725 and nighthawk cax80 which are indeed comparable because they work on the same ax6000 network segment, this time we compare Arris Surfboard g36 with Netgear nighthawk cax30 which is also comparable which both products work at the same ax3000 network segment.
Table 2 below shows you spec comparison between Arris Surfboard g36 and Netgear Nighthawk cax30s (the affix s means the purchase includes 90-days Netgear Armor network security subscription).
Slightly different specs
Technically, these two products work on the same network segment, although the signal rate is slightly different @ 2.4Ghz radio band, while @5GHz high band is the same. Although in Netgear Cax80 series Netgear designed this product for the middle class product segment, the Netgear Cax30 series was designed for the entry level product segment.
Compared to the cax30 which is not equipped with a multi-gig Ethernet port, the g36 comes with 2.5Gbps Ethernet LAN port. However, the g36 is not equipped with a usb port like the cax30. If the multi-gig port on G36 is not used for high speed NAS, with cax30 you can use the usb port to share usb disk storage across the network.

Which is more profitable buying a separate cable modem with wifi 6 ax1800 router, or buying a compact all-in-one device such as Surfboard g36 or Cax30s?
If calculated docsis 3.1 cable modem like Motorola mb8611 or Surfboard sb8200 costs around $ 150, plus wifi 6 ax1800 router around $ 100. So the Surfboard g36 or cax30 all-in-one product is more economical and reduces clutter of devices in your room. See also comparison between Netgear cm2000 vs Motorola mb8611.
However, if you want to upgrade your wifi network to be faster, you will lose the opportunity to do so, considering that your cable modem cannot be separated out of the router.
