New D-link DIR-880L Vs Asus AC68U Vs R7000
Compared to its competitors, D-link is a little bit late in releasing new product with new technology for faster router speed. For example wireless AC1900 router, D-link AC1900 was released to the market sometimes in march 2014. On the other hand, Netgear released similar product, the R7000 Nighthawk sometimes in Oct 2013. Asus also released this similar product sometimes in Sept 2013. D-link finally released DIR-880L wireless AC1900 several months later than Asus AC1900 and Netgear AC1900.
What this product does?
DIR-880L is high performance wireless AC1900 router delivering total bandwidth of up to 1900Mbps (600Mbps on 2.4Ghz + 1300Mbps on 5GHz). Fast lane of wired connection with up to four Ethernet based devices and can handle multiple wifi devices with fast wifi network within your household. Share your storage and printer within the network or create your own cloud storage to store your multimedia contents accessible anywhere you can connect to the internet from your mobile devices.

Originally D-link produced a wide range of wireless n routers with the flat box like model and with two or three external antennas. Then all the newer models came with cylindrical towering model with an internal antenna system, you can see the DIR-868L model which is shaped like a sound system box. Now D-link comes with DIR-880L AC1900 and is back with its original design with flat model lying horizontally with three external antennas.
This model D-link AC1900 is similar with its competitors that have been around in the market for several months earlier i.e. Asus AC1900 (RT-AC68U) and Netgear AC1900 (R7000 Nighthawk). If you’re looking for the speeds, there are two types of routers much faster than this AC1900 routers i.e. wireless AC2400 router and wireless AC3200 three band router, and they have been around for a while such as Asus RT-AC87U; Linksys EA8350 and Netgear R7500 Nighthawk X4. The last three routers come with wireless AC2400 technology, while for the wireless AC3200 you may consider Netgear Nighthawk X6 (R8000). Actually Asus showcased RT-AC3200 router version in CES 2014, however so far it is not released to the market yet up to this Nov 2014. Some rumors say this product will be released Dec 2014, not sure yet.

What makes this product different?
Most popular wireless AC1900 routers come with standard features including simultaneous dual bands delivering speeds of up to 600Mbps on 2.4Ghz + 1300Mbps on 5GHz. Other features like Gigabit Ethernet for LAN and WAN interfaces and the inclusion of dual USB ports are the same except different functionality feature. For general purpose what a USB port should do something like sharing a printer or USB disk storage is the same.
In D-link AC1900 DIR-880L router you can create something like a personal cloud storage with the USB storage attached to the USB port of the router. D-link comes with MyDlink SharePort to allow you create personal cloud storage you can access the files remotely using your Android or other tablet computers with the mydlink SharePort app you can download.
You cannot find this feature in Netgear R7000, however R7000 has some beneficial features including ReadyShare Vault; Time machine support; and is iTunes compatible. With the ReadyShare vault free software you can attach a USB disk storage and allow your PC to backup automatically to the attached storage. For Mac users, you can utilize the Time Machine for automatic backup.
Please note that new generation of Netgear AC1900 now comes with new Netgear Genie and ReadyCLOUD USB Access something like your personal Cloud that allows you to access your home network remotely via your mobile devices.
What about USB port with Asus AC68U? With USB 2.0 port in Asus you can share 3G/4G modems other routers cannot do. This is beneficial wired broadband internet services are not available in the area.
With D-link you have myDlink SharePort feature, Asus has a feature that is much nicer than just SharePort feature can do, you can even sync data between routers, you can access your data from anywhere and at any time with your Android mobile devices or iOS based-devices, as long as you have an internet connection. This is AiCloud feature – an exclusive Asus cloud service.
D-link AC1900 DIR-880L supports VPN with its QuickVPN feature. With your LAN behind the D-link 880L you can allow users connect via secure VPN tunnel by creating QuickVPN profile. You can create L2TP over IPSec VPN profile that includes the username and password; the share key; by either MSCHAPv2, PAP, or CHAP Authentication Protocol and MPPE encryption.
With Asus AC1900 RT-AC68U you can also create a VPN server easily. With this VPN server this router supports, you can browse the net and access your data from anywhere via the internet securely with MPPE encryption.
Netgear doesn’t feature native VPN.
Those who are aware about the hardware will need to know what CPU is used to drive the device. Unlike Netgear R7000 which is powered by Broadcom BCM4709A, both Asus AC68U and D-link 880L are powered by older generation of Broadcom BCM4708A. And all the three routers are equipped with the same amount of memory, 256MB RAM and 128MB flash.
This D-link 880L is cost about $170 in Amazon with average customer rating is 4.0 out of 5 stars, almost the same average customer rating as Asus RT-AC68U. on the other hand, Netgear AC1900 R7000 is rated slightly higher i.e. 4.1 out of 5 stars.
