New Airport Extreme Ac Vs Netgear R7000
How good is Apple Airport Extreme Ac router (ME918LL/A) compared with Netgear ac1900 router?
The wireless ac (802.11ac) is the 5th generation of Wi-Fi technology that has been introduced into the market since few years ago, most networking vendors have been competing to offer new generation of wifi products based on wireless ac technology. You can mention Netgear with its R6300 wireless ac router with USB 2.0 port in its first release and the second version comes with USB 3.0 which is 10x faster data rate throughput than USB 2.0. In addition, it comes with beamforming technology for solid wifi connection to clients, it’s like a jet fighter that locks the enemy with its air-to-air missile weapon.
Like Netgear, other vendors including Linksys, Asus, D-link and Buffalo introduced their first wireless ac routers as well. Not all vendors were lucky with their debut in wireless ac routers, even though at the end they could work out to fix some minor issues to lift the performance better. Linksys EA6500 received only 3.5 out of 5 star customer ratings in Amazon. Buffalo received better ratings of 3.7 out of 5 star slightly higher than Linksys. Airport Extreme ac Vs R7000
Unlike other vendors which introduce various models of wireless ac routers, Apple introduces only two wireless ac routers i.e. Airport Extreme AC and Time Capsule. The other one is still based on wireless N600 technology – the Airport Express base station. Guess what Apple loyal users responsed to these products? Excellent, you can compare Airport Extreme with Netgear R7000 wireless ac router.
Some vendors experienced less favorable ratings in its debut; you can mention Asus with its RT-AC66 router which experienced a firmware issue at the first time it was released. However Asus didn’t take long time before finally fixed the firmware as soon as possible, and now you can see that Asus wireless ac routers are getting excellent ratings today. Apple always makes sure that its product released into the market is the final product that will perform in its best, eliminating possible failure in all aspects. So that’s why you can assure that Apple Airport Extreme wireless ac router will not be disappointing.

Both routers differ in speeds particularly in 2.4GHz band, but they deliver the same high speed up to 1300Mbps in 5GHz band with AC devices. Airport Extreme comes with 450Mbs in 2.4GHz band while R7000 comes with 600Mbps. Regarding the total bandwidth, it is a good idea to consider new Netgear Nighthawk X6 – a three band wireless ac router with a total bandwidth of up to 3200Mbps – ideal for larger home with more wifi devices.
With this theoretical speed, you should upgrade your computers to catch up the speed for better data rate throughput. Netgear offers you A6200 wireless ac USB adapter, or you may also consider Asus AC1200 (USB-AC53).
Both routers use the same BeamForming antenna technology for solid wifi client connections. Apple puts 6 antenna arrays on top of the router; you know that the router is designed different than the previous models with tower form factor. This assures a better range compared with the previous models which are designed with flat body lying on the table. With higher antenna position on the top, the range performance is better.
Netgear R7000 is also designed differently compared with the previous models; it is equipped with three detachable external antennas with high power amplifier for much better range and performance.

As usual Apple equips their routers with three gigabit LAN ports only, compared with other routers that generally come with four LAN ports. I think most users are not complaining with fewer ports because typically only one or two desktop computers connect directly to the router using UTP network cable. At home I use two ports for connecting to the server that is equipped with two Gigabit NIC ports. other mobile devices connect wirelessly including the kid’s laptops, Android mobile devices and other smart-phones.
USB ports can change your mind in selecting which router you should choose. The two routers come with different number of ports. Airport comes with only one USB 2.0 port while Netgear R7000 comes with two different USB ports, one port is USB 2.0 and port number 2 which is located in front is USB 3.0 port.
Both routers receive excellent customer ratings in Amazon. However, Airport Extreme receives average customer rating higher (4.6) than R7000.
