Netgear Wax610y Outdoor AX1800 AP vs Unifi Flex HD
Netgear introduces new Netgear Wax610y wireless ax1800 access point outdoor. How is it compared with Ubiquiti Unifi Flex HD indoor / outdoor AP?
For most indoor wifi networks, the signal strength will be dropped if accessed by outdoor clients because of many obstacles such as the thickness of the building walls which result in wifi signal attenuation. For this reason, there must be a wifi device placed outdoors that is weather resistant so that the signal is strong without any obstacles for outdoor clients.
Netgear released two wireless ax access point models targeted for business offices, hotels or campuses wifi network needs, namely a wireless access point based on wifi-6 technology, Netgear wax610 ax1800 AP for indoor needs and Netgear wax610y which is weather resistant for outdoor needs.
Wax610 vs Wax610y
The two wireless ax access point series are technically the same in principle, only a few different specs that can be presented in the following spec differences table.
Physically both models have different dimension and weight, the indoor wax610 is a flat rectangular box shape and is powered by 12v dc power or more simply using a POE Ethernet connection so there is no need to bother installing power outlets around the installed devices. However, the outdoor version only supports POE Ethernet.
In contrast to the outdoor wax610y which the body is physically longer like other outdoor AP models in general, for example Ubiquiti uap-ac-m-pro, the weight is almost twice that of the indoor wax610 model and is coated with a P2i nano-coating that meets IP55 rated water resistance for outdoor placement. You can compare with Ubiquiti Unifi Flex HD which is designed with small and sleek model.

Both wax610 and wax610y are designed based on wifi-6 ax1800 technology, delivering two streams of 2×2 MU-MIMO each band with speed of up to 1,200Mbps @5GHz band and up to 600Mbps @2.4Ghz. Today you can find more mobile devices come with wifi-6 adapter such as Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop that comes with built-in 2×2 MU-MIMO ax201 with speed up to 2.4Gbps.
With more wifi-6 based mobile devices to come, your wifi-6 access point need more bandwidth, probably Netgear wax610 with ax1800 is not enough, however you can add more APs to form mesh wifi system for single network name, you can combine wax610, wax610y series together with Wac505 /510 /540 series to create mesh wifi system for more bandwidth with the same network name.
For large deployment, you need to add POE switch to allow multiple wax610 devices create robust and seamless roaming between multiple AP devices.

Netgear wax610y vs Unifi Flex HD
Another product you may also consider is the one offered by Ubiquiti, the Unifi Flex HD which is small and sleek and yet powerful with 4×4 MU-MIMO wave 2 ac2100 dual radio bands. You can place it on a pole outdoor, it’s weatherproof too.

The main difference is the wifi technology, Netgear wax610 is based on latest wifi-6 technology, while Unifi Flex HD is based on wave 2 AC technology. If your wifi clients are mostly work @5GHz band, Unifi can connect more devices concurrently than wax610.
For large environment, Netgear wax610 with 2.5Gbps POE Ethernet port delivers twice as high speed as Unifi that only comes with 1Gbps.
With mesh configuration, Flex HD uses 4×4 MIMO @5GHz radio band as backhaul link and share with clients, so does Netgear wax610 uses 2×2 MIMO as backhaul link when combined with other wax610 series.
