Netgear C3700-100NAS Vs Surfboard SBG6580 Cable Modem

At a Glance

The first wireless cable modem router combo or technically we call it a wireless gateway introduced by Motorola is Surfboard SBG6580. It is an all-in-one cable modem plus a wireless router, a single compact device you can use to build a wifi network in home with Cable broadband internet services. Netgear also offers you various models of wireless cable modem gateway including C3000 and C3700-100NAS which are based on 802.11n and the latest one is Nighthawk C7000 – the fastest wireless modem router combo offered by Netgear and is based on wireless AC1900 technology.  The first modem router combo based on wireless AC technology introduced by Netgear is C6300 wireless AC1750 cable modem gateway.

Please note that Arris offers new wifi gateway product – the Surfboard SBG7580AC based on high speed 32/8 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem with wifi AC1750 router.

Why wireless gateway?

Not all people have the knowledge of computer networking in depth, at least knowing how to connect modem and wireless router and their configurations that might include IP addressing, DNS and more networking stuffs. However, with wireless cable modem gateway you just require a single all-in-one device such as Motorola SBG6580 or Netgear C3700-100NAS DOCSIS 3 cable modem router combo. All of your wifi network configurations can be done through a configuration menu provided by each of these devices and perhaps one or two steps you need assistance from your ISP by phone.

With C3700 or SBG6580 you can eliminate the clutter of devices and cabling on your table that generally consists of a cable modem and a wireless router. Surfboard 6580 gateway has been around for a while, but Netgear C3700-100NAS came later and more products will come with more features. How they are compared based on their spec?

The following comparison table shows you spec comparison (if any) between the two products.

Many people turned out to be wrong in choosing sbg6580 with the expectations to all of wifi computer clients operating either in the 2.4GHz or 5GHz frequency band can connect to this cable gateway. They cannot connect altogether because the SBG6580 can only work in single band either 2.4GHz or 5GHz band in a time. This Surfboard gateway is a selectable dual band gateway.

If you have couple of mixed wifi clients, some work in the 2.4 GHz operating band and others can only operate on the 5GHz band, and then sbg6580 is not your choice. All you need is a router that can operate dual band simultaneously. Netgear C3700 is a simultaneous dual band gateway based on wireless N600 technology; each band can deliver up to 300Mbps and total up to 600Mbps bandwidth.

Does your home have more wifi clients or wired clients (desktop computers)? Most home computer networks require only one or two desktop computers that connect directly to the router, Netgear C3700-100NAS comes with two Gigabit Ethernet ports. You require a switch addition if more wired clients need to connect to the network.

While Surfboard SBG6580 is embedded with four Gigabit Ethernet ports to let you connect more wired clients including your game console or Smart-TV. Even though today you can manage your multiple multimedia devices including XBOX, Blu-Ray and Smart-TV can be wired together to the wireless gateway that comes with multiple Ethernet ports such as Linksys WUMC710N and connect wirelessly to your wireless router.

Another useful feature Netgear C3700 offers is the inclusion of USB 2.0 port to allow you to share the USB disk storage or printer. No available USB port in Surfboard, too sad.

Another product you might also like to consider is the N450 based-wireless cable modem – the Netgear wireless N450 cable modem. It is a single band modem with N450 wifi technology. Perhaps you also need to make sure that all of your wifi clients do not operate at single 5GHz band, because this product can only operate on a single 2.4GHz band. Besides its drawback with single 2.4GHz band support, this Netgear N450 cable modem is beneficial since it is embedded with two USB 2.0 ports for sharing storage and printer together.
Compared with Surfboard SBG6580, this N450 series is almost the same with the inclusion of 4x gigabit ports. with 6580 you can select the operating band, but with N450 Netgear you don’t have option to select the band.

Or probably you may consider the fastest one offered by Netgear – the Nighthawk C7000 which is based on wireless AC1900 technology and 24×8 channel bonding – internet speeds of up to 960Mbps.

Based on the manufacturer’s spec between the two modem devices, Netgear C3700-100NAS is more favorable with simultaneous dual band and USB port inclusion for sharing the disk storage. Moreover, with Netgear Genie you can manage your home network using your mobile devices easily.
