Linksys Velop vs Netgear Orbi Mesh Wifi
There are many mesh wifi system products that are sold in the market by Linksys, Netgear and other vendors, and this time I will focus on two big vendors Linksys and Netgear with their lines of mesh wifi products.
Linksys velop vs netgear orbi
Basically the mesh wifi system kit sold in the market consists of the mesh wifi router plus one or more its satellites / mesh points. For example in the Linksys velop Ac4400 system consists of a combination of two sets of Velop Ac2200, or from Linksys velop Ac2600 consists of two velop Ac1300. Linksys velop and Orbi have different concepts for routers and satellites.
Firstly we discuss one by one each of the products before comparing linksys velop vs netgear orbi.
I. Linksys velop
Basically there are only two Linksys velop models, namely velop AC1300 and velop AC2200 and one additional is satellite in the form of wall-plug as wifi extender.
- Velop AC1300
- Velop AC2200
- Velop wall-plug satellite
Each velop can work either as a router or satellite (extender). While netgear orbi is different in concept, it is distinguished between mesh orbi router and orbi satellite.
Linksys velop is packed with intelligent mesh technology features that are modular in nature, you can add one or more velop units as needed and the velop system will adapt to the needs of your home.
There are two kinds of velop system (velop ac1300 and ac2200) that are modular either to operate as router or as satellites (extender), plus one kind of satellite in a wall plug model for easy placement in power outlet.
I.1. Linksys velop ac1300
Velop ac1300 is a dual band velop mesh system with speeds of up to 867Mbps @5Ghz and 400Mbps @2.4Ghz band with MU-MIMO and 256 QAM support. One ac1300 velop unit can cover your home needs up to 1,500 sq ft. if the coverage is less extensive then you can add one or two more velop units, so also what happens to Netgear orbi both linksys and velop are modular unit.
- Dual band ac1300 simultaneous
- Speeds of up to 867Mbps @5Ghz plus 400Mbps @2.4Ghz
- Coverage up to 1,500 sq ft
For details, you can look at the product link later and few specs on the Linksys velop vs netgear orbi comparison table.
I.2. Linksys velop ac2200
The difference between the velop AC1300 and velop AC2200 is in the technical design of the number of bands applied to the system. If on velop AC1300 is designed to work with two radio bands, then the velop AC2200 is designed with three radio bands and of course the speed is different.
- Three band simultaneous AC2200
- Total aggregated speeds up to 2,200Mbps (867Mbps + 867Mbps + 400Mbps)
- Coverage up to 2,000 sq ft
Linksys velop ac2200 can fit to all home size, you need to add more units as needed.
I.3. Linksys velop wall-plug
This Linksys velop wall plug model is a WiFi extender from your velop mesh system, it is also modular you can add anywhere it requires wider coverage or eliminate dead zones. This model is very easy to use because it is just plugged to install in your power outlet where a stronger wifi is needed.
- Dual band simultaneous AC1300
- Speeds up to 867Mbps @5Ghz + 400Mbps @2.4Ghz
- Coverage up to 1,500 sq ft
Before we compare the linksys velop vs. netgear orbi products, we need to proceed first by briefly discussing the Netgear Orbi products.
II. Netgear Orbi
Orbi Netgear basically has three models, Orbi router rbr20, Orbi satellite and Orbi voice.
- Orbi router rbr20
- Orbi satellite
- Orbi voice
From here we can build a wifi network by adding one Orbi router (rbr20) with one or more Orbi satellites, same as we did in Linksys velop. Unlike Linksys velop which does not distinguish between velop router and satellite, with Netgear Orbi there is a difference which one is a mesh router and which one is a satellite.
Netgear Orbi currently only displays on its Netgear website one Orbi rbr20 router which previously had another model which is now considered to be no longer in use even though there are still many available in the market the Orbi rbr50 router model. So from now on select the latest model orbi rbr20 plus satellite. In addition, Netgear also offers Orbi cbk40 cable modem mesh wifi, all –in-one mesh router with built-in cable modem.
II.1 Orbi router rbr20
Orbi rbr20 is a three band mesh wifi router as the basis of all orbi configurations available on the market that you can add one or more Orbi satellites.
- AC2200 Three band simultaneous
- Wifi speeds of up to 867Mbps @5ghz 1, 867Mbps @5ghz plus 400Mbps @2.4Ghz band
- Coverage up to 2,000 sq ft
Later we will see a comparison table between linksys velop vs. netgear orbi routers in another paragraph in more detail. Besides that, Orbi also introduces an orbi router with built-in cable modem that you can also add with orbi satellite for wider coverage.
II.2 Orbi cable router
Orbi CBR40 is an Orbi mesh router with built-in high speed cable modem, it is ideal for those of you who don’t want to be bothered with clutter of devices on your desk. CBR40 is a combined modem cable plus orbi mesh router in one device.
- Orbi router plus cable modem
- based on AC2200 simultaneous three bands
- Wifi speeds of up to 867Mbps @5Ghz + 867Mbps @5Ghz + 400Mbps @2.4Ghz
- built-in DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem with 32×8 channel bonding
- coverage up to 2,000 sq ft
For wider coverage you can add one or more Orbi satellites according to your needs.
II.3 Orbi satellite
If the coverage of one mesh orbi router is not wide enough and there are still many dead zones you need to eliminate, then you can add one or more orbi satellites, either Orbi satellite as extender or Orbi rbs40v voice satellite.
II.3.1 Orbi rbs50
Rbs50 is the most extensive satellite reaching up to 2,500 sq ft in addition to your orbi router if it is deemed to be lacking in coverage your large home.
- Orbi satellite with three band ac3000 design
- wifi speeds of up to 400Mbps @2.4Ghz + 866Mbps @5Ghz + 1733Mbps @5Ghz
- One band @5Ghz 1733Mbps is used as dedicated backhaul link to the Orbi router
- Coverage up to 2,500 sq ft
- 4x Gigabit LAN ports
Just like Linksys velop satellite, Orbi is also modular you can add one or more orbi satellites to the Orbi router as needed.
II.3.2 Orbi rbs40
Besides rbr50 with ac3000, Netgear also provides a smaller satellite with an ac2200 design that you can add to your orbi router for wider coverage.
- Orbi satellite ac2200 three band design
- wifi speeds of up to 867Mbps @5Ghz + 867Mbps @5Ghz + 400Mbps @2.4Ghz
- dedicated backhaul 867Mbp @5Ghz
- Coverage up to 2,000 sq ft
- 4x Gigabit Ethernet ports
As with rbs50, rbs40 also uses one of the 5 GHz bands as a dedicated backhaul link to the router or to the other orbi nodes.
II.3.3 Orbi rbw30
Besides the two rbs50 and rbs40 satellite models, Netgear also provides satellite in a wall plug model for your convenience to increase coverage by plugging it into a power outlet. Linksys velop also provides similar type of satellite with the wall plug model as well, just like a wifi range extender.
- Orbi satellite that works only with Orbi system
- based on ac2200 three band system
- wifi speeds of up to 867Mbps @5Ghz + 867Mbps @5Ghz + 400mbps @2.4Ghz
- dedicated backhaul 866Mbps @5Ghz
- coverage up to 1,500 sq ft
- Ethernet port n/a
There is still an outdoor Orbi rbs50y as a satellite too, because Linksys velop does not provide similar product, so we will not discuss it here. And another is the Orbi voice, Linksys doesn’t release such kind of this product, so we don’t discuss it either.
By recognizing the two vendors who release a variety of mesh wifi system products, it is easiest to understand what the difference between the two products is of course you have to know what product to compare as we discussed above.
Linksys velop releases two models of dual band ac1300 and three band ac2200 mesh wifi routers, while Netgear Orbi has not released any of two band Orbi products, all Orbi are three band model so we will make a comparison of the Linksys velop AC2200 with a Netgear Orbi rbr20 router which are both three band model mesh wifi system.
The following is linksys velop vs netgear orbi spec comparison table, take a look carefully.
Table 1 Linksys velop vs Netgear orbi

Note that the two mesh router products are at a glance the same, but there are a number of different features.
Firstly, even though Linksys and netgear are the same three bands systems, Netgear is different in terms of using one of the 5 GHz bands as a dedicated backhaul link from Orbi satellite to Orbi router or any orbi nodes.
Linksys velop does not use backhaul link. With the backhaul link, communication between nodes has a dedicated radio band @5Ghz, not shared with the clients. While Linksys uses shared bandwidth together for nodes link and users.
Secondly, the capacity of the embedded flash memory is different for processing needs. Note that Linksys has a much larger flash memory capacity than Orbi.
This flash memory is for storing software or firmware and the needs depend on how complicated the program is stored in it. And also to save all configurations of your system stored there in flash memory. It’s a non volatile memory, software and programs are still saved in the memory even though the power is off.
Both velop and Orbi design the antenna systems internal, but the number of antennas is different. Linksys velop comes with more internal antennas than Orbi, and both are equipped with high power amplifiers. Other spec details you may follow the product links below including link to shop in Amazon.
