Linksys MR9600 AX6000 vs Netgear vs TP-link

Although the time lapse interval is about a year with Netgear in releasing the ax6000 router product, finally Linksys also released a Linksys MR9600 wifi 6 router product in the ax6000 network segment, although up to date Linksys has not yet released wifi 6 router product in the ax11000 network segment like Netgear with its Netgear rax200 and TP-link with its TP-link Archer AX11000 router. Probably Linksys is not interested in producing wifi 6 routers in the ax11000 network segment due to its small market share compared to the market share in the ax1800 network segment like Linksys MR7350 and Linksys MR9600 in the ax6000 network segment.

We will compare Linksys mr9600 with Netgear rax80, and also TP-link Archer ax6000.

Linksys MR9600

Physically the design of mr9600 model is simple with a square box model with its four corners not designed with sweet curves like the Netgear rax80. However Linksys provides optimal air circulation on both the lower and upper sides of the body, so that heat dissipation can be quickly circulated optimally.

Or compare with Archer ax6000 which the design of the body is square flat with eight corners and each corner sits one external antenna. This is the physical difference between mr9600 that comes with 4pcs external antennas and Archer ax6000 that comes with 8pcs external antennas. On the other hand, rax80 comes with 4x internal antennas on its two wings.

All the three products are designed with the same WiFi 6 technology with 8 streams 4×4 MU-MIMO with a total aggregated bandwidth of up to 6,000Mbps. If at home you have 4 devices with each supports 2×2 MU-MIMO then the wifi router with 4×4 MU-MIMO will send data streams to the two devices simultaneously. You can compare with if your device does not support MU-MIMO then the router will send 2 data streams 2×2 MIMO in sequence, so it’s slower.

So make sure your home devices also support MU-MIMO so that your wifi network works optimally and send multiple data streams simultaneously, reducing network latency. So, technically all the three products Linksys mr9600, Archer ax6000 and Netgear rax80 have the same wifi technology. However, MR9600 is ready with the future of wifi security encryption in industry – the WPA3 instead of just WPA2, but Rax80 and archer are not ready.

Network Interface

If you need more Ethernet ports for your Ethernet-based devices at home, Linksys mr9600 is only equipped with 5xGigabit Ethernet ports like other wireless routers in general. On the other hand Netgear rax80 has one more gigabit LAN port than mr9600, and Archer ax6000 comes with even 8x Gigabit LAN ports and 2.5Gbps WAN port.

With Netgear Rax80, you can combine two LAN ports in aggregated link when you require higher speed of 2Gbps wired connection with the NAS with 2x Gigabit aggregated link ports such as Synology 4 bay NAS DiskStation DS418 that comes with 2x Gigabit LAN with aggregated link feature.

There are couples of minor differences including WPA3 the latest of wifi encryption in industry today, mr9600 is ready with this WPA3 but the other rax80 and archer ax6000 are only WPA2 ready.

The cheaper product is TP-link Archer AX6000 which is tagged around $299, cheaper than rax80 and mr9600. Linksys mr9600 is newly launched so no wonder the MSRP is still high around $426 so far, and generally the prices are down by time.

Another model of wireless ax6000 router is also released by Asus – the Asus rt-ax89x ax6000 wifi 6 router – this one is supposed to be for more connected devices that comes with 12 streams.
