Linksys EA9200 Wireless AC3200 Router
Linksys introduces new wireless ac3200 EA9200 router with three band technology. How good it is compared with Asus RT-AC3200, Netgear X6?
With the introductions of various models of wireless AC3200 – a three band wireless router, mostly they are designed with six external antennas to handle separate three band signal traffic. Three major networking vendors introduce wireless ac3200 routers with six external antennas including Asus RT-AC3200; Netgear Nighthawk X6; and D-link DIR-890L. Unlike those routers with six external antenna design, Linksys comes with 3 external antennas (with three embedded internal antennas) for its three band routers which is Linksys EA9200 wireless AC3200 routers. It is therefore the model looks simple with the rigid stand that can be placed on your table occupying less space.
What this product does
Linksys EA9200 is high speed wireless AC3200 router with three band technology (two 5GHz band and one 2.4GHz band) delivering total bandwidth of up to 3200Mbps. It comes with full features of high performance router for streaming HD video, online gaming and other high intensive bandwidth applications.
- High speed up to 1300Mbps wireless ac in 5GHz band(2600Mbps for two 5GHz bands), and up to 600Mbps wireless n in 2.4GHz band.
- Automatically prioritizes and balances devices in two 5GHz band with Smart Connect technology
- High performance router powered by 1GHz dual core main processor and three co-processors for a total of 2.96GHz of Penta-core processing power.
- Three internal antennas are embedded fix into the PCB and three adjustable external antennas
- Gigabit Ethernet interfaces and two USB ports (1x USB 3.0 and 1x USB 2.0)
This price of this EA9200 router is around $290 in Amazon, not so much different with Asus RT-AC3200 router ($295) or Netgear Nighthawk X6 ($299). With price differences among those three routers, you might be wondering which one is best to meet your business needs.
Generally all the wireless AC3200 router products have similar features including total bandwidth aggregation; Gigabit port interfaces, USB 3.0 and more features. So what the differences? If you see the design of the model each of the product, you can find that Linksys has three external antennas and look simpler compared with other competing routers with six external antennas. Many people think that the more and the longer of external antennas will deliver stronger signal. Actually Linksys embedded three more fixed active antennas internally for total of the same six antennas like others to reduce the clutter of antenna rods.
Smart Connect Technology
This is a new technology specifically designed for three-band router. With the two 5GHz bands certainly client connections can be unbalanced overloading to one of the 5GHz band if there is no regulatory system that balances the clients load connected to router. For this reason Smart Connect technology comes to resolve the problem that is in charge of dividing the clients load automatically to connect to which 5GHz band is the best for connecting. While other traditional wifi clients can connect to separate 2.4GHz band without interference the two 5GHz bands.
Like Linksys EA9200, Asus RT-AC3200 also comes with this technology as well as Netgear R8000 / nighthawk X6 and new D-link AC3200 router. This smart connect technology becomes standard feature that should be present in three-band routers.
Traditionally a wireless router comes with a single processor to drive all the processing tasks including the wireless traffic, routing, switching and other tasks. With the wireless AC3200 routers, wireless traffic becomes more complicated with three bands running simultaneously. Linksys EA9200 comes with 1GHz dual core main processor with the addition of three co-processors for a total of 2.96GHz of Penta-core processing power. With this powerful processing system, your router is capable of handling multi tasks allowing more clients to connect and running high intensive application tasks simultaneously and smoothly.
What about the other competing routers? Have a look at the following table processor comparison between Linksys EA9200 and others.
Table 1 Linksys 9200 Vs Asus AC3200 Vs Netgear R8000 Processor
|Linksys EA9200||1GHz dual core plus 3 offload processors for total of penta-core processor with clock total of 2.96 GHz|
|Asus RT-AC3200||Asus just specifies 1GHz dual core main processor for this router, no idea of other co processors.|
|Netgear Nighthawk X6||1GHz dual core processor with three offload processors|
Asus doesn’t specify if the RT-AC3200 router comes with other co-processors in addition of the main 1GHz dual core processor.
Linksys EA9200 like other high performance routers comes with Gigabit Ethernet ports both WAN (1x) and LAN ports (4x). In addition, it also comes with two USB ports, 1x USB 3.0 and 1x USB 2.0 ports. This Ethernet and USB ports configuration becomes standard for high speed wireless AC routers.
However, Asus RT-AC3200 can support two WAN connections. Instead of a single WAN port, you can configure one of LAN ports to becomes the second WAN port as a backup connection when the first WAN services is disrupted. Linksys and Netgear R8000 do not support this feature.
All the three routers have the same number of USB ports with combination of 1x USB 3.0 port which the speed is 10 times as fast as USB 2.0 port, and one USB 2.0 port. They can function for sharing storage and printer and are also DLNA media server. However there is something Asus has that others don’t – the feature of sharing 3G/4G modem.
The following table 2 compare the routers regarding the USB functionality. You can see that Asus RT-AC3200 the only router that can share 3G/4G modem, Linksys and Netgear don’t have this feature.
Table 2 USB Ports Comparison Linksys Vs Asus Vs Netgear
|Model||Sharing Storage and printer||3G/4G sharing||Other features|
|Asus RT-AC3200||Yes||Yes||AiCloud mobile app allows you access your files across the internet with your Android and iOS mobile devices|
|Netgear R8000 Nighthawk X6||Yes||No||ReadySHARE Vault—Free software for automatic PC backup to a USB hard drive connected to the router|
In addition, all the three routers are DLNA media server support to allow you access multimedia files from any DLNA compatible devices seamlessly within your home network.
The customer’s responses for this Linksys EA9200 are so positive and I can say the average customer rating is 4.3 out of 5 stars in Amazon so far. And with the retail price is around $280 this router is competitive.
