The Linksys Velop series is a line of mesh wifi systems offered by Linksys. Within this series, the Velop MX5 is the first to feature wifi 6 technology, also known as 802.11ax. The latest series offered by Linksys are Linksys Atlas, and the lighter model was  just released is Linksys Velop Pro wifi 6e. So far, up to early 2023 linksys doesn’t showcase new lines of mesh wifi series like TP-Link and Netgear. Both TP-Link and Netgear have showcased their new lines of wifi 7 products, the new 7th generation of wifi technology. However, Linksys added new middle tier Linksys Velop Pro 6e, in addition of Linksys Atlas Max 6e which has been around for a while in the market.  We’ll discuss this new line up product in the next paragraphs below.

Unlike its predecessor Linksys Velop MX5 which came with simultaneous three radio bands, the linksys atlas pro 6 turned out to be a more economical version with the same wifi 6 technology but with dual radio bands instead of three. Linksys incorporates Qualcomm’s Immersive Home 216 Platform chip that delivers simultaneous dual band with 6 streams with a novel, modular architecture for advanced wifi 6 network packet processing.

Wifi technology

Both sit in the same network segment, however the design number of radio bands is different and so is the number of data streams each band. Link communication backhaul between nodes is also different. The previous linksys velop series use dynamic backhaul method between its bands. While linksys atlas pro 6 uses share backhaul @5ghz together with connected devices. Both series support optional wired Ethernet backhaul using either daisy chain or star backhaul topology considering that both models have more than two LAN ports.

Reduce Spec

When you compare to its predecessor Velop MX5, Linksys reduces the spec on this Atlas Pro 6 product including the number of Ethernet ports, no USB port and the processor spec from quad core to dual core. Not just that; the capacity of flash and RAM memory only half of velop mx5. Certainly this will reduce the speed of tasks processing and in turn have an impact on router performance. However, it also depends how efficient the design of the firmware, it could be with more efficient firmware design the requirement of dual core cpu is appropriate.

See that the price of this new product is cheaper than the Velop ax5300 model, that’s normal since the specs are lower than velop mx5. However, when you compare with other similar products have been around in the market including Orbi rbk752 or Deco x90 series this Atlas pro 6 is still costly.

The Atlas Pro 6 is the first product in the middle segment network class to feature two radio bands, whereas most products in this network segment are typically three-band mesh WiFi systems. Three-band mesh products usually designate one of the 5GHz radio bands as a dedicated backhaul. However, this time, Linksys employs a new chipset from Qualcomm’s Immersive Home 216 Platform, which is a chipset designed for two bands with 6 streams.

With the Orbi RBK752’s dedicated 2,400Mbps backhaul, up to 1,800Mbps of total bandwidth (1,200 + 600) is available for connected devices. On the other hand, the Atlas Pro, with shared bandwidth, dynamically adjusts for backhaul needs and connected devices, without a dedicated bandwidth allocation for backhaul. In terms of total bandwidth, the Atlas Pro proves to be more advantageous, even though it operates on two bands and shares the 5GHz bandwidth for both backhaul link requirements and connected devices.

Both products, in addition to offering a WiFi backhaul option, also provide the flexibility of a wired backhaul using a UTP network cable connection between the mesh router and satellite nodes. This wired backhaul option ensures a highly reliable connection that remains unaffected by signal interference.

When utilizing a wired backhaul, the Atlas Pro allocates all of its bandwidth to the connected devices. In contrast, with the Orbi’s wired backhaul, the dedicated backhaul cannot be utilized by connected devices. Instead, it remains on standby, serving as reserve bandwidth in case there are any issues with the wired backhaul connection. In such cases, the Orbi system seamlessly switches to WiFi backhaul to replace the wired connection.

From a technical standpoint, the shared bandwidth for backhaul in the Atlas Pro proves to be more advantageous when using a wired Ethernet backhaul, as it ensures all available bandwidth can be utilized by connected devices without any reservation for backup purposes.

Both the Linksys and Orbi router nodes feature four Ethernet ports, providing ample connectivity options. However, it’s worth noting that Orbi satellite nodes have only two Ethernet ports available. If you opt for a wired backhaul configuration, you have the choice of using either a daisy chain or star backhaul topology, depending on whether you have two or three satellite nodes. In terms of hardware specifications, the Orbi outperforms the Atlas. The Orbi boasts a quad-core processor and offers significantly larger memory capacity, both in terms of flash memory and RAM. This larger memory capacity enables the processor to complete processing tasks at a faster rate. In contrast, the Atlas is equipped with a dual-band processor and relies on the Qualcomm Immersive Home 216 chipset specifically designed for dual-band WiFi 6 operations.
