Google OnHub Router by Asus and TP-link

Google OnHub wireless routers have been released by TP-link (TGR1900) and Asus (SRT-AC1900).

What is Google Onhub?

A new era the way you wifi has been presented by Google through its partners TP-link and Asus with its product wireless router OnHub. Both almost have the same design, the sleek eye-catching compact design – a round-cylinder model. TP-link Onhub design is wider on top, while Asus design is almost the same but it turned upside down with the bottom side wider.

The first Google Onhub product was manufactured by TP-link with its product TGR1900 and the second product was manufactured by Asus with its SRT-AC1900 series. Not much different from the wireless router in general, actually there are some notable differences, in essence is to provide services to wifi clients in your home.

Both of these products are very convenience if your wifi network only serve multiple mobile devices including Android, iOS and other Windows phone devices in addition of laptops. However, for the need of reliable wired connection such as Gaming desktop computer or networking storage disk, Google OnHub wireless router is less favorable since you only have one Gigabit LAN port available in addition of Gigabit WAN port for connecting to the modem.

Reduce wires clutter

Google idea is to reduce the clutter of the wires within the house, and indeed Onhub is intended to put out in the open so that to broadcast the wifi evenly throughout the room.

Unlike wireless routers in general which is typically placed at the corner where broadband cable line and the modem is located, Onhub intended to be placed in the center of the house and to become as part of the room decor. Hence only available one RJ45 Ethernet port for LAN connection in addition of one RJ45 WAN port. Although in fact, there is still clutter of cables to connect the WAN port of the router to the WAN – which is the network cable to the broadband modem. Setting-up device is also easy with free Google On app you can download via your mobile devices including Android and iOS. As easy as you configure new TP-link touch screen router P5.

Wave control

A new way to boost the wifi speed of a particular device you can wave your hand over the top of OnHub router to prioritize the bandwidth. In traditional wireless router you need to configure which device node requires network prioritization. Both TP-link and Asus OnHub come with this wave control.

For more description and spec details:

Both of these Google OnHub products are still evolving with the upcoming firmware for more home automation integration. USB port is still not used to function, next firmware upgrade probably will fix to function.

Limited LAN ports probably becomes a drawback for this product to attract online gamers to choose the product. A powerful Asus RT-AC5300 or Netgear Nighthawk X8 would be preference for gamers. And with the same wifi AC1900 technology, you may consider TP-link Archer C9 or Asus RT-AC68U for better performance and hardware equipment. You may also consider TP-link RE590T touchscreen wireless range extender and place it in the center of home for extending wifi.
