Google Nest Wifi System vs Orbi vs Velop

Continuing Google’s success in the wifi network products with its Google mesh wifi system product, now Google is adding a new mesh wifi series system called Google Nest Wifi. We’ll discuss this product and compare it with competing Orbi AC2200 (Orbi RBK23) and Linksys Velop AC4400.

What this product does

Like the mesh wifi system in general that replaces the wireless router and range extender, Google Nest wifi also replaces your wifi router and no need for a wireless range extender because if a Nest wifi doesn’t cover your entire big house, just add one more Nest wifi router unit or add Nest point to cover larger area.

Nest vs Google wifi

The question many people have is what the strengths of Nest wifi system compared to its predecessor Google mesh wifi?

Nest Router

The main unit is Nest wifi router as the brain of Nest wifi system which is designed with ac2200 MU-MIMO dual band wifi technology. Compare with Google wifi which is a mesh wifi system based on AC1200 dual band system.

Coverage

Like Google wifi, Nest can also be modular, which you can add one or more Nest routers if the signal coverage is less for your large home needs. If with Google wifi consisting of 3 units (generally sold in 3 packs) that can cover up to 4500 sq ft, two units of Google Nest router can cover up to 4,400 sq ft. Same coverage offered by Orbi and Velop AC4400.

Unlike Google wifi, Nest provides Nest Point as an additional satellite which besides increasing coverage, this unit also functions as Google Assistance that can receive your voice commands to interact with Nest Point which is equipped with speakers and microphone.

Processor

Look at the comparison table between the two Google product series below. Note that the processor embedded in each product has different performance and memory capacity. Nest is embedded with a quad core processor with a speed clock twice as fast as Google’s wifi, means Nest delivers more powerful processing tasks than Google wifi.

Google Nest vs Orbi vs Velop

Google Nest wifi (2pack) router without Nest point is sold at a price around $ 270 on Amazon, it is competitive compared to similar products like Orbi which the first time released to the market the price was expensive, and now the price has begun to drop knowing that the new mesh wifi 6 products are available in the market such as Orbi wifi 6 mesh system and TP-link Deco X60 wifi 6 system.

Take one of Orbi series – the Orbi rbk23 which consists of 3 packs of Orbi AC2200 tri-band mesh wifi system. Take a look at the following table 2 below that compares Google Nest wifi (2 packs) with Orbi rbk23 (3 packs). And the second table is comparison between Google Nest and Velop AC4400 which consists of two packs of Linksys Velop AC2200 tri-band mesh wifi system.

Orbi and Velop are based on tri-band wireless ac2200 delivering speeds of up to 400Mbps @2.4GHz and two @5GHz bands with each speed up to 867Mbps. With Orbi, not all the three bands are used for connected users, but one of @5GHz band is used as dedicated backhaul link between Orbi nodes. Velop uses all the three bands are used both as connected clients and shared backhaul link between nodes.

Google Nest wifi doesn’t use dedicated backhaul link between Nest nodes same as Velop. All the three products support wired Ethernet backhaul links between nodes to free up all the radio bands for connected clients. However, many users report that Orbi is not reliable with wired backhaul, probably Orbi use dedicated radio band @5GHz as backhaul link.
