Eero Pro vs Linksys Velop vs Orbi

Eero introduces professional, advanced model of eero which is double performance than the original eero home wifi system – the eero pro. We’ll see how eero Pro vs Linksys Velop vs Orbi are compared.

What this product does

Eero pro is like its predecessor eero home wifi system – a replacement of wireless router and wireless range extender, a reliable home wifi system. eero pro is designed with 2nd generation of wave 2 wifi technology with multi user MIMO (MU-MIMO) to allow the system deliver multiple data concurrently to multiple devices at the same time for faster throughput, eliminating network latency. Ideal for streaming 4K video and online gaming with multiple devices at the same time.

Next-generation mesh network technology

Eero is designed uniquely with TrueMesh technology to work perfectly with eero hardware, a routing software with dynamic routing algorithms so eero units can hop not only to one direction to the next hop, it travels to any hops for optimum route, no wonder that the Flash memory is 4GB.

Faster

eero claims that the performance of this pro version is doubled, and it is a now three band model instead of two band model like its original eero home wifi system. The speed is also faster, it has three band with speeds of up to 600Mbps @5Ghz and up to 240Mbps @2.4Ghz band.

Single network name

Like mostly mesh home wifi systems including Linksys Velop and Orbi, eero pro is a high performance wifi system with single network name so you can roam with your mobile devices within network coverage seamlessly with the same SSID name.

Auto update

Firmware update is a nightmare for non experienced users, less knowledge of networking people. They do not really care about updating their wireless router with latest firmware update, as long as the router is still working. Firmware update is typically used to mitigate the security holes of the router and is also frequently used to upgrade the features of router.

eero pro three band mesh wifi system

Eero pro is designed with automatic update, device will download the update automatically and upgrade it to the latest firmware as soon as eero global ready with security update. This is a good thing to have your eero in latest security update, no manual action needed. Competing products like Linksys Velop and Orbi are not featuring auto update.

Eero Beacon

Like other wifi mesh system products, eero also released the add-on of this eero pro with the eero beacon with a wall plug model, the same name as the wifi mesh products released by Nokia Mesh wifi system, the Nokia Beacon 1 and Nokia Beacon 3.

The features are almost the same, there are only differences in the number of radio bands port interfaces, the Eero Pro is designed with three bands with 2×2 MU-MIMO while the Eero Beacon is designed with only two bands. The technology is the same as Eero Pro, which is 2×2 MU-MIMO wave 2 technology. However, the Eero Beacon is not equipped with an Ethernet port and the range is also narrower up to 1,000 sq ft compared with Orbi pro (1,500 sq ft).

Eero Pro vs Linksys Velop vs Orbi

Before comparing Eero with Linksys velop and Orbi, firstly we need to summarize what Linksys Velop and Orbi are. In detail Linksys velop and Orbi have been discussed in other articles including the following articles, comparison between Meshforce M3 and Linksys Velop and Linksys Velop vs Netgear Orbi Mesh Wifi.

Linksys Velop

In a nutshell, Linksys velop consists of two models namely velop Ac1300 and Linksys velop Ac2200. Unlike Orbi, like the Eero model each unit can operate as a mesh router or satellite node. There are three models of Linksys velop:

linksys velop ac2200 mesh wifi system
linksys velop ac2200 mesh wifi system
  • Velop AC1300 (WHW0101)
  • Velop AC2200 (WHW0301)
  • Velop wall-plug satellite (WHW0101P)

1. Linksys velop AC1300 is a two band model with total bandwidth up to 1200Mbps (867Mbps @5Ghz + 400Mbps @2.4Ghz) with coverage up to 1,500 sq ft and comes with two Gigabit Ethernet ports.

2. Linksys velop AC2200 is a three band model with total bandwidth up to 2200Mbps (867Mbps @5Ghz + 867Mbps @5Ghz + 400Mbps @2.4Ghz), coverage up to 2,200 sq ft with two Gigabit Ethernet ports.

3. Linksys velop wall-plug model with dual band AC1300 (867Mbps @5Ghz + 400Mbps @2.4Ghz), no Ethernet port.

In this comparison we’ll take Linksys velop whw0302 which consists of three units of Linksys velop AC2200 for total bandwidth of up to 4,400Mbps.

Netgear Orbi

Orbi is technically divided into two categories, Orbi router and Orbi satellite. There are two models of Orbi routers, Orbi rbr20 and Orbi rbr50, but at this time Netgear only display Orbi Rbr20 on their website.

Orbi rbk23 thri-band mesh system
Orbi Rbk23 Mesh Wifi system with plug-in satellite

There are four models of Orbi satellite that are displayed in Netgear website:

  • Orbi rbs40 (867Mbps @5Ghz + 867Mbps @5Ghz + 400Mbps @2.4Ghz) up to 2000 sq ft with 4 Gigabit ports
  • Orbi rbs50 (867Mbps @5Ghz + 1733Mbps @5Ghz + 400Mbps @2.4Ghz) up to 2,500 sq ft with four Gigabit ports
  • Orbi rbw30 wall plug model (867Mbps @5Ghz + 867Mbps @5Ghz + 400Mbps @2.4Ghz) up to 1,500 sq ft, no Ethernet port
  • Orbi Voice Satellite Rbs40v (867Mbps @5Ghz + 867Mbps @5Ghz + 400Mbps @2.4Ghz) coverage up to 2,000 sq ft with built-in Alexa and Harman Kardon speaker

All Orbi models are designed with three radio band and one of 5Ghz band is dedicated for backhaul link between nodes and the other 2.4Ghz band and 5ghz band are used by clients. There is still other older models that are not displayed in Netgear’s website such as Rbs20 satellite with 2 Ethernet ports and AC2200, same as other Orbi satellite.

This time, we take Orbi RBK23 that consists of Orbi rbr20 router plus two Orbi rbs20 satellites as competing products for eero Pro.

Comparison table

To match the number of radio bands, we choose Eero Pro (3-set) with Linksys velop AC2200 (3-set) and Orbi rbk23 (3-set). Two tables are shown to help you see spec comparison between Eero pro and Linksys Velop (table 1) and between Eero pro and Orbi (table 2).

Speeds

All the three products are three band mesh system but with different speeds. See that eero offers lower speeds than the other two. Eero specifies that the speed is doubled than the original eero home wifi system. however the eero pro is technically written with the speed up to 600Mbps @5Ghz and up to 240Mbps @2.4Ghz band.  This technical spec is lower speeds compared with Velop and Orbi.

Hardware performance

All the three products are powered by nearly the same processor, quad core processor with the same memory either RAM and flash memory. This means that they have the same hardware performance to drive the processing tasks for better performance. Number of Ethernet ports is different, Orbi offers more ports than eero and Velop.

Coverage

Eero claims that three pack of eero pro is appropriate for every homes in any size. Technically eero specify the coverage each eero unit is only up to 1,500 sq ft, while the other two products offer larger coverage. Network coverage depends on home environment including walls and best placement of the unit.
