What this product does

Many years ago D-link introduced DGL4500 for gaming with Game-Fuel technology when the wireless N standard was around the market with the speeds of up to 300Mbps each band, gigabit Ethernet ports and one USB port. Today when the 5th Generation of wifi technology (wireless ac) is booming, D-link offers DGL-5500 gaming router with wireless ac technology delivering the total bandwidth of up to 1300Mbps.

Unlike the 4500 version which was equipped with three external MIMO antennas, this D-link 5500 and most new generations of D-link routers are designed with tube-like model and internal antennas, look elegant and eliminating the clutter of the antennas.

Main features

  • Based on wireless ac simultaneous dual band
  • Speeds of up to 450Mbps and 867Mbps
  • Gigabit ports: 4xLAN and 1xWAN and 1x USB 2.0
  • StreamBoost™ Traffic Shaping Engine
  • Cloud-Based Updating System

Speeds and Stream Boost technology

If we are talking about gaming, the demand is the speed; the higher the speed is better, smoother and no lagging. But Dlink DGL 5500 is not powered by the highest speed wifi of wireless AC1700 as it is on Dlink DIR-865L or DIR-868L while the price is higher. Compared with other wireless ac routers such as Netgear R6300 v2 or Asus AC66, Dlink 5500 is not faster with maximum total speed of 1300Mbp Vs 1700Mpbs on R6300.

Note that the newest model D-link offers is D-link 895 AC5400. See also comparison DIR-895 Vs Asus RT-AC5300 and also comparison between D-link AC5300 and Nighthawk X8.

Dlink specifically designs the DGL-5500 for gamers in mind, speed is very important for online gaming. But Dlink introduces Stream Boost technology for traffic shaping engine that can automatically and intelligently manage the bandwidth based on the app and device. We know that the wireless is shared bandwidth among all wifi clients on the network. Each clients share the slice of bandwidth equally no matter what application you are running. When your mate is downloading a huge traffic of HD video from the net, he is probably hogging your bandwidth causing the lagging experience of your online gaming. With Stream Boost by QualComm Atheros, your gaming experience will be given a prioritization over other app traffic.
