Asus Zenwifi XT8 vs Velop vs Surfboard

Asus offers Zenwifi xt8 ax6000 mesh wifi-6 system. How good is Zenwifi xt8 compared with Velop MX10 and Surfboard ax7800 mesh wifi?

Asus Zenwifi series come with two models, Asus Zenwifi xt8 ax6000 mesh wifi-6 which is typically sold in two packs consists of mesh router and mesh satellite; and the lower speed model is Asus Zenwifi ct8 ac3000 mesh wifi AC technology.

Asus Zenwifi series is designed in such a way with tower form factor with a circuit board and internal antennas array design which is partly designed with 45 degree angle to ensure even signal coverage to the second floor of your house. The body case with double heatsink design is engineered to ensure maximum heat dissipation for best network performance.

We’ll focus on Zenwifi xt8 and compared it with Linksys Velop mx5 wifi-6 mesh wifi and Arris Surfboard ax7800 mesh wifi.

Asus XT8 vs Velop vs Surfboard

With the introduction of Asus Zenwifi xt8, Zenwifi will compete with two large vendors that have first released to the market in the ax6000 network segment, namely Velop mx5 offered by Linksys, Orbi rbk852 offered by Netgear, and also Surfboard ax7800 which is later introduced by Arris.

Linksys introduces Velop Mx5 mesh wifi-6, and sold in two packs with the product name Velop MX10 and sold in three packs with the product name Velop MX15.

On the other hand, Arris also introduced two models of mesh wifi-6 systems, Surfboard Max Pro ax11000 with total aggregated bandwidth up to 11,000Mbps and the lower model is Surfboard Max Plus ax7800.

The following two tables below show you spec comparison between Zenwifi xt8 and Linksys Velop Mx10 (table 1) and spec comparison table between Zenwifi xt8 and Surfboard Max Plus (table 2).

Wifi

Technically, these three products have different speeds and if you look at the wifi speed column in the two tables below, it can be seen that the Surfboard provides the largest aggregate bandwidth (7800) followed by Zenwifi xt8 (6600) and the smallest aggregated bandwidth is Linksys Velop Mx5.   

The three bands of each product do not provide all the aggregate bandwidth for devices connections, part of which is used for the backhaul link between the router and the satellite.

Backhaul link

The mesh wifi system uses backhaul link for communication between the mesh router and the mesh satellite. In general, this backhaul link uses a dedicated radio band or shared bandwidth with the connected client. So, not all the whole bandwidth is available for connected devices, but some is used as backhaul link.

XT8 allows you to choose which of the 5GHz radio bands is used as dedicated backhaul link, either 2400Mbps or 1200Mbps @5GHz band as dedicated backhaul link. On the other hand, Velop Mx10 uses tri-band dynamic backhaul link approach.

Surfboard ax7800 Max Plus uses dedicated backhaul link @5GHz radio band @4,800Mbps, so leaving the other two radio bands with aggregated bandwidth up to 3,000Mbps for connected clients.

All the three products support wired Ethernet backhaul by connecting the WAN port of the mesh router and the mesh point (satellite). So have all the available three radio bands used for connected clients.

Asus Zenwifi comes with built-in free commercial grade AiProtection network security and advanced parental control powered by micro Trend. With Velop you may subscribe Linksys Shield as network security protection plan.
