Asus RT-AX89X Wifi 6 AX6000 vs Netgear Rax120

Previously Asus has released the Asus rt-ax88u which is based on the ax6000 network segment, this time Asus feels it has not fully armed the ax88u to become a powerful router so that it designs one more ax6000 router series namely Asus rt-ax89x. We’ll compare this rt-ax89x with Netgear rax120 in the following paragraphs.

What this product does

Compared to the design of the rt-ax88u model with four external antennas which is like wireless routers in general, the Asus rt-ax89x is designed with 8 external antennas surrounding its eight corners of its flat round body like an inverted spider. The 8x external antennas with the accompanying technology applied to rt-ax89x becomes the main difference between the rt-ax88u and rt-ax89x even though both are in the same ax6000 network segment.

Asus rt-ax88u vs rt-ax89x

For those of you who are curious about the differences between the two WiFi 6 router models released by Asus, both of which are in the same ax6000 network segment, you can see the following spec comparison table between Asus rt-ax88u and rt-ax89x through below.

The number of antennas is important as a support to get greater data throughput, and of course with 8×8 @ 5GHz means there are 8 transmits and 8 receives so that more data throughput is sent simultaneously to several MU-MIMO devices in a time.

If you have 4x connected devices with 2×2 MU-MIMO support at home, rt-ax89x can send data simultaneously to all four devices at a time. On the other hand, with rt-ax88u can only send simultaneously to 2x connected devices with 2×2 MU-MIMO supports.

So that the rt-ax89x can accommodate more connected devices without increasing network latency, so that your wifi network has better performance with a higher density of connected devices. This spec is the same as applied to Netgear rax120 ax12 ax6000.

Take a look at the spec comparison table between the Asus rt-ax88u and rt-ax89x.

Multi Gig Ports

The addition of a 10Gbps or 10Gbps SFP port for most home users in general will not be utilized, however many people require high speed NAS connection with multi Gigabit port such as Asustor AS4004T that comes with 10GbE for home or office storage such as NVR camera system storage and backup needs for all your connected computers.

In addition, Asus rt-ax89x comes with twice more Gigabit LAN ports than wifi router in general, the more Ethernet-base devices connect including desktop PCs, game consoles, internet TV, and still more with more reliable wired connection.

RT-ax89x is one of Asus devices that support AiMesh technology, it’s not a mesh router. However, if you have other AiMesh support devices you can combine them together to form a whole home wifi system with single SSID name or multi SSIDs. The good thing is that all the routers features work across the entire WiFi system. Like Netgear Eax20 ax1800 range extender which is universal extender in connecting to Netgear rax120 or any third party wifi routers, can create the whole home network with the same SSID as the connected router.

 Asus ax6000 vs Netgear

Now, let’s see how this product is compared with one of Netgear product which has similar features – the Netgear ax12 Rax120 ax6000 routers.  As a reference, you can use table 2 below that shows you spec comparison table between Asus rt-ax89x vs Netgear rax120 wifi 6 ax6000 routers.

Technically both routers are having the same 12 streams of wifi 6 ax6000 technology, including the number of antennas even though Netgear uses internal antennas that are actually spread into 4x antennas in each wing and technical wifi speeds are the same.

Port interfaces

Total number of LAN ports is different see the Ethernet row on the table. Asus is equipped with independent 10Gbps Ethernet port to allow you use it either as the WAN or LAN port. And the addition of SFP+ interface is a plus when you require high speed reliable wired fiber optic link with 10Gbps speed such as high speed NAS.

Security protection

Another advantage when you select Asus rt-ax89x is the inclusion of lifetime free AiProtection Pro network security protection powered by Trend Micro with automatic and regularly updated security signature for the safe of your connected devices against any internet threats.
