Asus RT-AC87U Wireless AC2400 High Performance Router

Indeed Asus RT-AC3200 has not been released to the market (until this article is written Sep 2014) to compete with the Netgear R8000 AC3200 router which has been released to the market, Asus RT-AC87U has been introduced into the market, how it will compete with other high performance routers.

Note: The newest Asus flagship is the RT-AC5300 three band router, check the link for more information.

What this product does

I think it makes sense that Asus need to ship the RT-AC87U before RT-AC3200 that has wider bandwidth. Total bandwidth this router can deliver is up to 2400Mbps:

  • 802.11n : up to 450Mbps
  • 802.11n TurboQAM up to600Mbps
  • 802.11ac: up to 1734Mbps

This is a dual band router delivering total bandwidth up to 2400Mbps. The newest version is the three band router including Asus RT-AC3200 and Netgear R8000 Night Hawk X6:

  • 802.11n : up to 450Mbps (802.11n TurboQAM : up to600Mbps)
  • 802.11ac: up to 2600 Mbps (5G band 1 and 5G band 2)

Main features

  • Unique 4×4 MU-MIMO antenna technology with AiRadar beamforming.

Large coverage

With the new Beamforming antenna technology with new multi user MIMO (MU-MIMO) antenna design which can increase more throughput when connect to the same MU-MIMO clients. Asus RT-AC87U is claimed to be able to cover up to 465m2 (around 5,000ft2), large enough for your large home. Amped with its R20000G wireless N600 router also claim to be able to cover up to 10,000sqft with its 600mW high power amplifier. However this is wireless N600-based router, the wireless ac-based version by Amped is RTA15 with two-stage four 5GHz high power amplifiers, no specific spec how large the coverage is.

Ethernet ports

Unlike most home wireless routers with gigabit Ethernet ports, one LAN port (of 4 gigabit ports) RT-AC87U can be configured to serve as a second WAN port like other small business class routers with dual WAN feature such as Cisco dual Gigabit WAN RV042G-NA VPN router. For demanding high bandwidth internet connection, you can subscribe two different ISP lines for load-balancing or redundancy.

Moreover, you can aggregate two LAN ports for link aggregation should your computer supports two NIC adapters. In most business class servers, they always come with multiple NIC adapters, and when you install them with Windows 2012 OS you can also configure two or more NIC adapters for aggregation link.

Heavy duty hardware

This RT-AC87U is powered by 1GHz dual-core processor like other high performance AC1900 routers including Netgear R7000, slightly slower processor than Linksys WRT-1900AC with 1.2GHz dual-core processor. However, instead of one processor as the main processing unit Asus AC2400 router adds another dedicated processor chip for 4×4 5GHz wifi tasks. If you compare it with the newest router introduced by Netgear Nighthawk X6, it is not comparable. Nighthawk X6 comes with 1GHz dual-core processor with addition of three offload processors. It is a high speed 3200Mbps router like new generation of Asus AC3200 router.

Other advantages are the inclusion of two USB ports, one USB 3.0 for high speed Super-Speed USB 3.0 storage and another USB 2.0 port for printer or 3G/4G share. Most Asus high performance routers come with 3G/4G share supports.

Operation modes

Even though Asus RT-AC87U supports multiple operation modes including router, wireless AP and Media bridge modes, most users do not take this feature account. They purchase the router solely to function as the wireless router connecting to the Cable or DSL modem.

This is a heavy duty wireless router for you that demand high speed router for high intensive bandwidth applications such as online gaming and smooth video streaming.
