Surfboard SBG6900 Vs Nighthawk Vs Archer

The first cable modem router combo offered by Arris with AC technology was Surfboard SBG6782, and the fastest cable modem router combo that Arris offers so far is Arris Surfboard SBG6900. This is Surfboard AC1900 cable modem router combo in addition of the first product Surfboard AC1750.

What this product does

Arris Surfboard SBG6900 is a compact three in one device that combines high speed DOCSIS 3 cable modem, high speed wireless AC1900 router and 4-port Gigabit Switch. Like the first AC product Surfboard SBG6782, with your existing broadband cable service traditionally you require native cable modem plus a wireless router. Now with this single device you reduce the devices clutter on your table.

With built-in high speed DOCSIS 3 cable modem up to 686Mbps downstream and upstream speed up to 131Mbps, and with the addition of high speed wifi with total bandwidth of up to 1,900Mbps your modem router combo is ideal for the best plan your cable provider can provide. Similar products from different vendors which have the same AC1900 technology are Nighthawk C7000 by Netgear; new comer in cable modem router combo TP-link Archer CR700; and still more including Linksys CG7500 that will be released soon.

Can Surfboard AC1900 cable modem compete with them?

Comparison Surfboard Vs Nighthawk Vs Archer

Arris with its line of Surfboard cable modem products are so popular and most of them become best seller in some online retailer stores including Amazon. Just to name the most popular Arris Surfboard SB6141, and the new ones are Surfboard SB6183 and SB6190 which now become most wanted cable modems in the market. However, Surfboard with wifi gateway is not so popular as Netgear. Let me compare the technical spec between Surfboard SBG6900 and Netgear Nighthawk C7000 as shown in the following table 2. And the other spec comparison is shown in the table 2 that compares SBG6900 and Archer CR700.

Modem speeds

Notice that Nighthawk C7000 is the fastest one with 24 channel bonding delivering downstream speeds of up to 960Mbps. On the other hand both Surfboard SBG6900 and Archer CR700 have the same number of 16 channel bonding delivering speeds up to 600Mbps.

Wifi speeds

Both Surfboard AC1900 and Nighthawk AC1900 engineered with the same AC1900 technology, technically both deliver the same wifi speeds with total bandwidth of up to 1,900Mbps both bands. With the price difference around 20 bucks, selecting the higher speeds cable modem is worthy. So far (up to Jul 2016) the average customer rating in Amazon for Nighthawk C7000 is 4.3 out of 5 stars, excellent achievement for cable modem router gateway so far compared with the previous models such as Netgear C6300 AC1750 cable modem. On the other hand, SBG6900 receives 4.5 out of 5 star rating.

Now, probably you are considering the lowest price offered by TP-link with its Archer CR700 AC1750 cable modem which is nearly the same spec as Arris Surfboard SBG6900.

Take a closer look at the following two table to help you compare which one is suitable to meet your need.

wish they posted the processer like asus routers do, and does the rt68u asus have the same specs with out the modem?

    • Ki Gr says:

Asus RT-AC68U is not a wireless gateway like Surfboard sbg6900, it’s a wireless ac1900 router. The wifi is the same delivering speeds up to 1300Mbps @5ghz and up to 600mbps @2.4ghz. Asus is embedded with Broadcom BCM4708A ARM Cortex-A9 dual core processor with 800Mhz clock, have no idea with Surfboard.

Speaking about the Surfboard sbg6900 what about security – http ://192.168.100.1 default IP allow Hacker to access my system without password due to remote attack known as CSRF -cross site request forgery – WOW – wish I known this fact before I purchase in September 2016 and now I cannot get rid of hacker unless I change internet provider! Any more options for me????

    • Ki Gr says:

You should’ve changed the default IP address and password at the firt time. The basic security rule for router is to change the default values including IP address, password and SSID. Can’t you change these default values? If you can’t change them actually you can reset the router to default values and you can change them accordingly.
