Unlike Apple who has released only two wireless AC router products i.e. Airport Extreme AC router and Apple Time capsule, Netgear has released numerous variants of wireless AC routers as well as other vendors including Linksys, D-link and Asus. Although Netgear has already released wireless AC1750 router (R6300) which was the first flagship in wireless AC router, Netgear released a new variant of wireless AC1750 router – the R6400 wireless AC high power router.

Netgear R6400

Netgear R6400 comes with more robust performance compared to the previous model R6300 router even though they are both based on the same wireless AC1750 technology. The high power three external antennas and Beamforming+ technology deliver stronger signal to cover your large house. The two USB ports help you to share the storage and printer, create personal cloud storage with ReadyCloud and can become storage destination of your PCs files for automatic backup with ReadyShare Vault software. And the other features that you might love when you are away from home are VPN and FTP features that you can configure easily.

R6400 Vs R6300

Many people are wondering why there are two types of wireless AC1750 routers exist, Netgear R6300 was built based on wireless AC1750, and comes R6400 another wireless AC1750 router. What are the differences between the two if any?

Take a look at the following comparison table between the two routers. There are three main differences i.e. the antenna design, USB port function, and Memory.

Antennas

Physically you can see the main difference is apparently the antenna design. R6400 is designed with three high power external antennas with beamforming technology, but R6300 is designed internally with high power radio amplifier.

USB ports

Secondly you can see the USB port inclusion which R6400 comes with 1x USB 3.0 in addition of 1x USB 2.0. R6300 comes with two USB 2.0 ports for sharing storage and printer at the same time. The new features that R6400 comes with are ReadyCLOUD and ReadyVault features, but R6300 doesn’t.

Let’s have the other competing wireless AC1750 routers – the TP-link Archer C7 and Asus RT-AC66U.

R6400 Vs Archer C7 Vs RT-AC66U

TP-link today comes with more variant products including cable modem which it never stepped on it before but ADSL modem. The first flagship product in wireless cable modem is TP-link Archer CR700 , it is a wireless AC1750 router with built-in DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem with 16/4 channel bonding. TP-link offers Archer C7 wireless AC1750 router with more economical price compared with R6400 and Asus RT-AC66U.

Wifi technology

All the three routers come with the same wireless AC1750 technology; delivering speeds of up to 450Mbps in 2.4GHz band wireless N and up to 1300Mbps in 5GHz band wireless AC.

Antennas

Netgear R6400 and Asus AC66U design the same high power 3x detachable external antennas with Beamforming technology. Asus designs its own AiRadar that is derived from beamforming technology. Beamforming provides robust signal strength to wireless AC devices, following the clients wherever they roam within the home. Archer C7 doesn’t use beamforming technology, the antennas are designed with three high power 5dBi external antenna for 5GHz band and 3x internal antennas for separate 2.4GHz band.

Interfaces

All the three routers offer the same Gigabit Ethernet interfaces both LAN (4x) and WAN (1x), high speed WAN for connecting to today’s DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem such as Netgear CM500 with 16/4 channel bonding up to 680Mbps downstream. TP-link also introduces new DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem (TC-7610) with 8/4 channel bonding similar with Surfboard SB6141, you know that this modem is cheaper than others in its class.

Both Asus RT-AC66U and Archer C7 include two USB 2.0 ports, Netgear is one step ahead with the addition of 1x super speed USB 3.0 (10x speeds than USB 2.0). The functionalities of the USB ports are slightly different. As general the USB port is used to share the storage or printer, all the three router have the same function. Asus offers unique function with the capability of sharing the 3G dongle, the other two routers cannot do that.

However, Netgear also comes with ReadyCLOUD that allows you access your files stored in the connected USB disk from anywhere. It’s like having a personal cloud storage. And the ReadyVault feature also helps you backup the PC to the connected USB disk automatically to eliminate the hassle of backup restore procedures.
